MATERIAL ANALYSIS – PMI
Favoured Prototype Specialist since 1924
Material analysis using X-ray complements classical laboratory analysis and provides a quick analysis (5-15 seconds) of a material’s chemical composition. This reduces production time and ensures the quality of the finished product.
Technology
PMI ANALYSIS
Using a PMI gun – a portable X-ray analysis device – we can very quickly analyse the elemental composition of a piece of metal or a weld seam.
PMI stands for Positive Material Identification and is a term used in connection with material verification and as a tool to ensure the alloy quality of a future product or component.
PMI uses XRF (X-ray Fluorescence), which is a method of determining the concentration of elements in materials (magnesium and heavier on the periodic table).
XRF analysers consist of two key components: an X-ray tube and a detector, which together can identify elements and their concentrations in samples.
WHAT IS MATERIAL ANALYSIS WITH PMI
Material analysis can be performed to test samples for their composition of elements or minerals. For this, typical NDT (non-destructive tests) such as PMI are used.
The released energy is measured, and thereby the chemical composition of the elements and minerals can be determined.
Assignments are welcome, also from other subcontractors in the industry.
